The show will play at Manchester’s Hotel Brooklyn on Portland Street, with performances from 24 February – 12 March 2023.

When the audience become diners in the ‘Faulty Towers’ restaurant, pretty much anything can happen – because 70% of the show is improvised. The fun starts as guests wait to be seated. It then hurtles along in a 2-hour tour de force of gags and shambolic service as Basil, Sybil and Manuel serve a ‘70s-style 3-course meal together with a good dollop of mayhem. The competition, now in its fourth year, is the second largest national playwriting competition and provides a great platform for new comedy plays and writers across the UK.

Previous winners include Katie Mulgrew, Simon Bradbury and last year’s winner, Colin Downland whose script ‘Headless’, set in a primary school on the morning of an Ofsted inspection, is now in development with Liverpool’s Royal Court.

In addition to the winner’s prize of £10,000, further cash prizes are available for commended scripts. Gerry Linford, who picked up a highly commended award, for his play, ‘The Miracle of Great Homer Street’ has since gone on to write three new plays produced by the Royal Court with a fourth planned.

Royal Court Executive Producer Kevin Fearon is looking forward to judging the competition. “We have been delighted to be involved with the Playwriting Prize since it began in 2015,” he says. “We have seen a huge number of entries for the previous competitions from all around the country and we are looking forward to doing it all again. The quality of the scripts has meant that the judging is always a difficult process but it means that the very best are chosen for the award”.

Other judges joining Kevin on the panel this year include: Dr John Bennett from Liverpool Hope University; writer Maurice Bessman; comedian and actor Les Dennis; talent agent Kate Haldane from PBJ Management, and Out of Joints Artistic Director, Kate Wasserberg.

Judges are looking for new full-length scripts for no more than 8 actors, with a story that has comedy at its heart. The competition is open to anyone over the age of 18 who lives in the UK or Republic of Ireland who has an original comedy script that hasn’t previously been performed.

The deadline for entries is 31 May 2020 and the winner and runner/s-up will be revealed at a ceremony in April 2021.

“There are huge numbers of people from all industries who know that they have a book, a song or a play in them and we are already seeing that creativity coming to the fore on social media,” Kevin adds. “Can you imagine if you took this time to get that play down on paper and it ended up winning you £10,000?”

Max Raabe was born 1962 in Lünen and has always sung – from the youth choir to even on his bicycle. He moved to Berlin in his early twenties to study opera. They are now the worldwide leading band of music from the era of the Weimar Republic.

Max has received numerous awards for his commitment to remembering the music of the 1920s and 1930s, including the ECHO Classic in 2000 for his interpretation of Mack The Knife; Paul-Lincke-Ring Of The City Of Goslar in 2005; the cultural prize of his hometown Lünen in 2007; and the Order Of Merit Of The State Of Berlin in 2012.

Their appeal is diverse and far reaching. Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester performed at the star-studded wedding of singer Marilyn Manson and model Dita Von Teese at a castle in Ireland in 2005.

His 2011 book for young adults has sold over a million copies and garnered huge critical acclaim, including an unprecedented double win of the Carnegie and Greenaway Medals for outstanding children’s literature and illustration.

It tells the story of Conor, a 13-year-old boy who knows his mother is seriously ill, and whose fear grows when no-one will really talk to him about it. Late one night, a monster pays him a visit: the enormous, ancient yew tree in his garden comes ferociously to life, and begins to tell Conor a series of harsh fables.

Exploring themes of family, grief, hidden emotions, truth, complex lives, bereavement and friendship, the monster’s tales ultimately help Conor face the truth of his situation.

Taking these same themes as inspiration, the Monster Writing Challenge is for young people aged 10-25 to tell a short story of their own. Entries must be no more than 500 words and selected stories will be narrated by members of the cast in a series of videos posted up on the production’s social media channels.

The new dance fusion company, which will launch at the event, promises a mix of dance styles on display, combined with stunning visuals, appealing to dance fans and musical theatre-lovers alike, as well as today’s YouTube and Insta-audiences.

The star-studded gala night is hosted by Got to Dance judge and Pussycat Doll, Kimberly Wyatt, with guest artists Flawless (Britain’s Got Talent and Street Dance 2), ballet star Brandon Lawrence (Principal Dancer with the Birmingham Royal Ballet) and West End star Chrissy Brooke (winner of ITV’s Dance Dance Dance.)

On the night, singer, dancer and choreographer Kimberly Wyatt will perform alongside Flawless in one number; BRB’s Brandon Lawrence will perform a solo choreographed by the award-winning George Williamson, while Chrissy Brooke will perform with the Z Company ensemble.

Saturday evening’s concert shines a spotlight on disco and soul spotlight with live performances from The Real Thing and Odyssey.

Odyssey return to Hale Barns direct from the USA due to popular demand to play to their “favourite audience”. Odyssey played at the very first Hale Barns Carnival in 2017 – and they’re set to wow audiences for a second time with hits including Use It Up & Wear It Out, Native New Yorker, Inside Out, and the iconic disco anthem Going Back To My Roots.

Liverpool soul legends The Real Thing, featuring original band members Chris Amoo and Dave Smith, will perform their top selling hits including You To Me Are Everything, Can’t Get By Without You, and Feel The Force.

On Sunday evening former EastEnder Martin Kemp headlines with a Back To The 80s DJ set. In the 80s Kemp enjoyed worldwide fame with Spandau Ballet so expect to hear him play some of the band’s classics like Only When You Leave, Through the Barricades, True, and Gold, to entertain the crowd.

Other acts joining the 80s line-up include front man of boy band Brother Beyond, Nathan Moore, whose hits include The Harder I Try, produced by Stock, Aitken & Waterman, and Owen Paul – who shot to fame with the song My Favourite Waste of Time.

During the day the weekend promises St Ambrose Fields will be buzzing with more than 100 family-fun attractions including falconry displays, magic illusionists, traditional fun fair rides, and an artisan market.

Daytime entry to Hale Barns Carnival is free between 12pm and 5pm on both days. The evening concerts are ticketed, gates open at 6pm with the concerts starting at 7.30pm. All 100% of the ticket revenue will go towards community projects.
