<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Both teams have donated Christmas trees to be auctioned off for <a href="https://www.francishouse.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis House Children’s Hospice</a> and the battles is on with bids open until 13 December.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The trees, which come with framed signed football shirts, team baubles and merchandise are a unique gift for footy fans.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Usually fans could view the trees on display at Quayside MediaCityUK’s (formerly Lowry Outlet) Festival of Trees. But this year sadly the shop was only open two days before lockdown saw it’s doors shut until at least 2 December.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Volunteers, Mary and Alan Gillatt, have been running the pop-up store every Christmas for 14 years raising almost £300,000 for the charity.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="750" height="473" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/11/Mary-and-Alan.jpg" alt="Mary and Alan Gillet" class="wp-image-2061" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/11/Mary-and-Alan.jpg 750w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/11/Mary-and-Alan-300x189.jpg 300w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/11/Mary-and-Alan-716x452.jpg 716w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Mary and Alan Gillet</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Browsing the delights on the individually decorated trees has become a much-loved tradition for families visiting the shopping centre.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People place bids on the trees and the highest bidder gets to take home the fully decorated tree and presents to go under it. Traditionally shoppers browsed the stunning display and placed bids on their favourite tree in store. However, this year the bidding has gone online.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>Each tree has a minimum bid of £50 and whoever has the highest bid by closing time on Sunday 13 December, gets to take the tree home.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As well as the trees from the city’s two Premiership clubs, there is a treat for cricket fans with The Hilton Garden Inn Lancashire Cricket Club tree offering an overnight stay in a pitch view room and club merchandise. For the beauty lover L’Oreal and Fibre Hair Salon have trees with a whole host of goodies; luxury hoteliers Mottram Hall’s tree comes with afternoon tea for two, Sunday lunch for two, Spa Day for two, Four-ball golf and a beauty hamper. While Towers Business Park has donated two trees including hundreds of pounds in Selfridges, Harrods and M&amp;S vouchers.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="611" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FrancisHouse_FestivalofTrees2020-1024x611.jpg" alt="Francis House Hospice Festival of Trees" class="wp-image-8279" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FrancisHouse_FestivalofTrees2020-1024x611.jpg 1024w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FrancisHouse_FestivalofTrees2020-300x179.jpg 300w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FrancisHouse_FestivalofTrees2020-768x458.jpg 768w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FrancisHouse_FestivalofTrees2020-716x427.jpg 716w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FrancisHouse_FestivalofTrees2020-820x489.jpg 820w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FrancisHouse_FestivalofTrees2020.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Francis House Hospice Festival of Trees</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In all, there are 32 amazing trees to bid on and the charity, which has had to cancel many other fundraising events due to the coronavirus pandemic, hopes this popular project will still be able to raise much-needed funds.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Julie Williams, Francis House fundraiser said: “We are so grateful to all our tree sponsors for coming to our aid in such difficult times and supporting the Festival Trees. The display looks magical and the variety of trees this year means that there is something for everyone.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="515" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FestivalOfTreesWideView-1024x515.jpg" alt="Francis House Hospice Festival of Trees" class="wp-image-8277" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FestivalOfTreesWideView-1024x515.jpg 1024w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FestivalOfTreesWideView-300x151.jpg 300w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FestivalOfTreesWideView-768x386.jpg 768w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FestivalOfTreesWideView-1536x773.jpg 1536w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FestivalOfTreesWideView-716x360.jpg 716w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FestivalOfTreesWideView-820x413.jpg 820w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2020/11/FestivalOfTreesWideView.jpg 1590w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Francis House Hospice Festival of Trees</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We of course couldn’t do it without the support from Quayside MediaCityUK who once again have generously donated a retail unit to the hospice to become home to the display in the run up to Christmas. We hope lots of people will continue to place bids whilst the shop is closed and look forward to welcoming them back if it is safe to do so in December.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Didsbury based hospice is facing a shortfall in income from cancelled fundraising events as a result of the coronavirus crisis. All money raised will be used to support the work of Francis House and help towards providing care and support to the families of children, teenagers and young adults with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions from across Greater Manchester.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Bids can be placed online by visiting <a href="http://www.festivaloftrees.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">www.festivaloftrees.co.uk</a><br>Read our<a href="https://quayslife.com/todoandsee/fundraising-festival-of-trees-lights-up-the-lowry-outlet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> interview with Mary and Alan Gillatt</a> for more details about the history of the Festival.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s the most wonderful time of the year – when Francis House’s Festival of Trees arrives at The Lowry Outlet Mall, making everyone’s visit to the Quays a little bit brighter.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And it is all down to Mary and Alan Gillatt, who’ve been running the pop-up store every Christmas for 13 years to raise money for Francis House children’s hospice.</p>

<a data-size="{&quot;w&quot;:1200,&quot;h&quot;:821}" href='https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/christmas.jpeg'><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="716" height="478" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/christmas-716x478.jpeg" class="attachment-opinion-b size-opinion-b" alt="Francis House Festival of Trees 2019 Lowry Outlet" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/christmas-716x478.jpeg 716w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/christmas-332x222.jpeg 332w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px" /></a>
<a data-size="{&quot;w&quot;:1200,&quot;h&quot;:900}" href='https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image5.jpeg'><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="716" height="478" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image5-716x478.jpeg" class="attachment-opinion-b size-opinion-b" alt="Francis House Festival of Trees 2019 Lowry Outlet" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image5-716x478.jpeg 716w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image5-332x222.jpeg 332w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px" /></a>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The couple’s involvement with the charity goes back 30 years &#8211; even before the hospice was built.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At that time, Mary was chair of the charities commission for McVities and was approached by the person who later became administrator for Francis House asking if, as the biggest employer in the area, McVities would help to fund-raise.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I remember coming to the Town Hall to see the plans for the hospice,” says Mary, “and we initially raised £10,000 which we thought would furnish and decorate a bedroom.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="473" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/11/Mary-and-Alan.jpg" alt="Mary and Alan Gillet" class="wp-image-2061" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/11/Mary-and-Alan.jpg 750w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/11/Mary-and-Alan-300x189.jpg 300w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/11/Mary-and-Alan-716x452.jpg 716w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Mary and Alan Gillet</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the hospice was up and running, Mary’s fundraising at McVities helped to buy the hospice its first minibus and together with her work colleagues she ran all kinds of events to help support the charity’s work.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now retired, Mary and her husband, Alan, who used to run a charity shop for Francis House, are still heavily involved in the work of the hospice. And have raised more than £280,000 through their annual Festival of Trees.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The idea initially came from David Woodrow, who was the fundraising office manager and had seen a similar scheme on a visit home to Zimbabwe,” Mary explains. “He’d seen decorated Christmas trees around a shopping mall and each was auctioned off for a different charity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We didn’t think we could put trees around a mall, but thought about the idea of a shop of trees. We approached the Lowry Outlet, which at that time was owned by Emmerson, and they very generously offered us a unit.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since then the Lowry Outlet has offered the charity a unit every year without charge, Mary and Alan run the shop as volunteers, open the same shopping hours as the other Outlet stores, with all funds going directly to Francis House.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“It’s long hours, hard work and we have a domestic now and again,” Mary laughs, “but we love it. We meet loads of lovely people. It’s a great way of putting something back, and I always say whenever you volunteer for anything you will get back far, far more than you ever put in”.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This year there are 52 decorated trees up for auction, all sponsored by different organisations. People place bids on the trees and the highest bidder on the closing date of 8 December gets to take home the fully decorated tree and presents to go under it. And there are some amazing and unusual gifts, including £500 of Selfridges, vouchers, a family holiday to Tunisia, hampers, hand-made decorations, and gifts from the casts of Coronation Street and Cold Feet, as well as sporting stars from Manchester City, Manchester United and Lancashire County Cricket Club.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="675" height="1024" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image10-675x1024.jpg" alt="Francis House Festival of Trees 2019 Lowry Outlet" class="wp-image-6582" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image10-675x1024.jpg 675w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image10-198x300.jpg 198w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image10-768x1165.jpg 768w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image10-716x1086.jpg 716w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image10.jpg 791w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px" /><figcaption>Francis House Festival of Trees 2019 Lowry Outlet</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes there are heart-felt stories behind the trees, such as when a family sponsored a tree to celebrate what would’ve been their son’s 18th birthday. “Their little boy died when he was two-and-a-half and when he was alive the family had been supported by Francis House,” says Mary. “They didn’t want their son’s 18th birthday to go without doing something special, and 16 years on from losing their son they fund-raised to decorate a tree for us out of the goodness of their hearts. It makes you feel very humble”.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image12-768x1024.jpeg" alt="Francis House Festival of Trees 2019 Lowry Outlet" class="wp-image-6583" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image12-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image12-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image12-332x443.jpeg 332w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image12-716x955.jpeg 716w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image12-820x1093.jpeg 820w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/11/image12.jpeg 900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>Francis House Festival of Trees 2019 Lowry Outlet</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition to the tree auction, the shop fund-raises by selling a small number of gifts, toys, crackers and Christmas cards, as well as running a raffle and a festive Wishing Well. There is also a memory tree, where people can write a memory of a loved one on tags provided in the shop and hang it on the tree. When the shop closes on 8 December the tags are transferred to a tree in Francis House which is illuminated for the whole of the festive season.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="488" height="750" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/11/Memorytree2.jpg" alt="Memory tree" class="wp-image-2064" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/11/Memorytree2.jpg 488w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/11/Memorytree2-195x300.jpg 195w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px" /><figcaption>Memory tree at Festival of Trees</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The messages make you think. It’s very humbling,” says Mary. “We had a note from a child who wrote: ‘Grandad died at Christmas and if he thought we didn’t celebrate because of him he’d come back and haunt us’. I just think for a child to think like that is amazing.”</p>
