Manchester-born
teen, Yami Mirazi makes his professional stage debut in Motown The Musical. The
show tells Berry Gordy’s story of how he founded Motown Records and the phenomenal
artists he launched on it, and in it Yami takes on the parts of a young Berry
Gordy, Stevie Wonder and a show-stopping Michael Jackson.

On stage at the Manchester Opera House, the reaction to the 13-year-old’s performance of the Jackson 5’s ABC is incredible. And his enthusiasm is just as infectious off-stage. “When I was little, I watched performers like Michael Jackson and sometimes TV shows like the Wiggles but when I saw The Lion King in the West End that was when I knew that this is what I would like to do for the rest of my life,” he says.

Yami Mirazi

Yami is so
dedicated to a career in musical theatre that he has been performing regularly
with We Are Characters drama group and North West Theatre and Arts Company for
many years. His love of music appears to have been present since almost
infancy, and he tells me that at just three years old he loved to sing along to
the full DVD of Paul Simon’s “Graceland” concert on repeat for weeks at a time.

“I just love
it so much”, he says. “When I am on stage dancing, singing and acting I enjoy
it so much and I know there are people watching me do what I love and having
fun.”

So, what
made Yami want to come along to the open auditions for the show? “I really
wanted to be able to play Michael Jackson and Berry Gordy and Stevie Wonder
because they remind me of how I want to be.”

<img decoding="async" width="700" height="262" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/02/10.-MOTOWN-THE-MUSICAL.-The-Company.-Photo-Tristram-Kenton.jpg" alt="Motown The Musical, UK Tour. Credit: Tristram Kenton

And how does
it feel to now be performing on stage as these iconic people? “It feels like a
dream but also a bit nervous because having to be as good at singing and
dancing as Michael Jackson has got to be one of the hardest things in the
world.”

After
performing Motown The Musical around the country, Yami is excited to bring the
show to his hometown: “It’s like a dream come true, I will be able to show my
friends and family and everyone else coming to watch the show that all their
support and all my work has finally paid off. I’m excited that they will be
able to watch me doing what I love and having fun on a professional show and
with professional actors and actresses.”

     data-ad-slot="9562399482"></ins>

In fact, it
seems to have been fate that Gorton resident, Yami would take on the role of
Young Michael Jackson, who performed in Gorton at King’s Hall, Belle Vue in
1972 as part of the Jackson 5. One of Yami’s favourite moments within Motown
The Musical is when he gets to perform a medley of Jackson 5 hits.

After such an exciting start on the
professional stage, Yami hopes there is a lot more to come, “I hope one day to
be performing on many stages and on screen and earning money that I can use to
make the world a better place. I would also like to help other children become
great performers.”

With such
dedication at such a young age, it’s no wonder Yami is bringing the house down
each time he performs some classic Jackson Five hits with Motown The Musical.

The
music of Tamla Motown needs no
introduction. The American record label nurtured the careers of megastars like Smokey
Robinson and The Miracles, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The
Temptations, The Four Tops, and Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5.

Although
now household names, in discovering their talent Motown founder, Berry Gordy
played a major role in improving race relations during the Sixties and Seventies
by bringing Black artists into the mainstream. As his character says to one DJ
during the show: ‘This is music for everyone.’ And so is this show, which at
its core is a musical tribute to the sound of a generation.

Edward Baruwa ‘Berry Gordy’. Photo Tristram Kenton

This
rich back-catalogue was ripe for a juke-box musical, and if anyone was going to
do it, it feels right it was Gordy, who has both produced the musical and
written its book. The show opened in New York in 2013 and after a run in the
West End it is now on its first UK tour.

Reece Richards ‘Jackie Wilson’. Photo Tristram Kenton

Unlike many juke-box musicals, Motown the Musical doesn’t take the music and shoe-horn it into a story. Here the music is the story, in so far as it is Gordy’s story of how a songwriter from the motor city of the USA, Detroit, borrowed $800 from his family to follow his dream of setting up a record label for Black recording artists, creating a new sound.

Karis Anderson ‘Diana Ross’ and The Supremes. Photo Tristram Kenton

It’s hard to imagine how revolutionary the idea must have been at the time. We get a taste of it during scenes where the singers perform to audiences forcibly segregated by police officers and signs denoting one area for whites and another for coloureds. For some radio stations there is even segregation on the airwaves.

These
are heavy issues for a musical, but the struggles only give more joy to the
uplifting sounds as their uniting force wins through.

The Four Tops. Photo Tristram Kenton

Where
the story weakens is in its emotional impact. Gordy gives us a breezy look
through his life with little sense of jeopardy or conflict. The closest we get
to the rifts between himself and the artists who outgrew the label is his
reluctance to attend a 25th anniversary celebration.

Gordy’s
success came at a cost to his personal life. But even in his intimate relationship
with Diana Ross, with whom he had a child, we are given little sense of the
emotional tension that must have existed. Brushed aside too is the fact that
the pair met when he was a divorced music mogul in his late-30s and Ross a teenage
school girl, wide-eyed and hungry for fame.

But
again, too much involvement in his personal story could distract from the music
which is what everyone has come for. In just under three-hours the musical
packs in more than 50 instantly recognisable tracks including: Ain’t No
Mountain High Enough, Reet Petitie, Dancing In The Street, Baby Love, My Girl, and
I Heard It through the Grapevine. To create such a super-charged medley of hits
is a tremendous feat itself.

The Jackson Five. Photo Tristram Kenton

Now 60 years on, the music isn’t any less infectious. The audience is itching to join in and director, Charles Randolph-Wright has created plenty of audience interaction along the way, that will have you holding hands and singing along with strangers next to you.

Edward Baruwa brings the house down as Berry Gordy, moving people to spontaneous ovations during solo numbers. Karis Anderson too has a unique spark as Diana Ross, handling the audience interaction with the humour and confidence of a true star. Thirteen-year-old Yami Miraz is also a show-stopper making his professional stage debut as a young Michael Jackson, one of four young actors sharing the role during the tour.

The Temptations. Photo Temptations

In
all, it is a super-slick show, making the most of high-tech projection sets
that allow for impressive set changes at filmic speed. The concert scenes have
all the vibrancy and impact of a live gig, with the support of a terrific
11-piece band led by Griff Johnson.

It’s a must see for Motown lovers and will no doubt win the label a whole new generation of fans.

It’s almost 60 years since the iconic record label, Motown was founded in Detroit, Michigan by the now legendary, Mr Berry Gordy. Synonymous with launching superstars such as, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and the Jackson 5, Motown Records enjoyed success on both sides of the Atlantic.

Now the story of the record label’s success, and phenomenal number of hits, is told in Motown The Musical. Currently a smash hit in the West End, the show embarks on its first UK Tour in October, stopping off at Manchester Opera House from 26 February – 23 March 2019.

We sat down with two of the people who know Mr Gordy, and the show, best: director, Charles Randolph-Wright and Creative Consultant, Michael Lovesmith who worked with Berry Gordy at Motown Records, coaching the Jackson 5, and producing the likes of The Temptations and The Supremes alongside a successful career as a performer.

“I was basically born and raised in music,” says Michael. “I was on the road as a child, singing in churches as a trio with my brothers. Then at age 11 I was introduced to Holland-Dozier-Holland, who signed me to a song writing contract, and I wrote my first song for them, to be performed by Dionne Warwick.

“It was the opportunity of a lifetime, and it was a good thing I had a good song! I met Mr Gordy at age 17, and by that time I had produced about twelve artists. Motown wanted me to work with the ‘Jackson 5’. I was their age, so I could relate to them in a way that not everybody could. They were so used to working with older people who didn’t quite understand their energy! I ended up becoming Berry Gordy’s protégé, and started producing and vocal coaching Michael and his brothers. Then soon after that I started recording with The Supremes and The Temptations. That’s pretty much how I got started.”

Charles Randolph-Wright joined the Motown family at a later stage, coming on board to direct Motown The Musical which premiered on Broadway in 2013. “For me Motown has always been part of my life,” he says. “The opportunity to work with Mr Gordy was mind-blowing when this project came up because he was and is a major inspiration to me.

“In terms of how I got started in directing, my family says that I was directing from the minute I was walking. Theatre fascinated me from my very first experience in the audience. But even as a performer, I always was intrigued by directing and writing. I was in the original cast of Dreamgirls on Broadway and directed a fellow performer’s nightclub act. That lead to several other acts, and more jobs followed. I knew then that would be my focus.”

Motown The Musical tells the story of Mr Gordy’s life and the development of Motown Records in Detroit, Michigan, which soon became known as Hitsville USA. But what was it like for Michael being at the epicentre of the Motown movement at the time? “I was desperate to get to Detroit and get working in music, but my parents wanted me to get through school, so I studied and studied so I could graduate from high school early and from there I went straight to Detroit,” he explains. “The funny thing about Motown is, I think Motown could have been anywhere, and in a sense it was.”

Charles nods : “Absolutely. Every city had a girl group, a guy group, a kids’ group and a lead singer, but the unique thing that Detroit had was Berry Gordy.”

“He was this beacon of light,” Michael agrees, “showing you what you can do and what you could be. There were musicians and singers all over the country, but Detroit had Berry Gordy, so it became a magnet for them.”

Charles explains how that then informed his direction of Motown The Musical, “Of course, that’s what we are able to explore in the show, how Mr Gordy’s ambition and talent founded Motown. It’s not a Detroit sound, it’s a Motown sound. Although some people think Motown is a real place!”

Michael laughs: “You know what though, it almost was.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-3353" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/09/9.-MOTOWN-THE-MUSICAL.-The-Company.-Photo-Tristram-Kenton.jpg" alt="MOTOWN THE MUSICAL.
With such an iconic sound that audiences have loved for almost six decades, how do you begin the process of faithfully recreating that on stage? Michael looks to Charles, and smiles. “We searched high and low for someone who understands the need for the show to sound like Motown,” he says. “One person came to meet us, and gave us his idea of how he would find a Stevie Wonder, a Michael Jackson, a Smokey Robinson, which we didn’t think was possible, and that person was Charles Randolph-Wright.”

“Oh, you were talking about me!” says Charles. “I didn’t realise, I was listening so intently!”

Michael adds: “Charles walked into the room and knew what Motown is, who Motown is and what Motown looks and feels like. He grew up on this music. He understood Motown, and that is what we were looking for. We put the show in his hands.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-3356" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/09/600-x-339-2.-MOTOWN-THE-MUSICAL.-The-Temptations.-Photo-Tristram-Kenton.jpg" alt="MOTOWN THE MUSICAL.
“Motown is all we ever really listened to growing up!” agrees Charles. So, with such an emotional link to the project did Charles feel under pressure when directing? “Oh yes, I felt pressure. It was so important to me because Mr Gordy is one of my idols, so I wanted to create the show that he wanted to see. I approached it the way that Berry Gordy approached it – I needed to find artists that would evoke a certain thing. What I never wanted to do was find people who would just impersonate those performers, I wanted them to make me feel the way Diana Ross made me feel, an actress that would actually make me put my hands up and sing ‘Reach Out and Touch’. I had a goldmine to work with because Mr Gordy and Michael were there to help, and they knew these people before they were the icons they became. I wanted to find people who had what these people did before they became stars. What was that spark, what was that tone?”

Michael says: “What was great about Charles’ casting process is he would find people who were so good, we wanted to sign them as artists in their own right! He had a vision, just like Mr Gordy. Sometimes I even call him ‘Little Berry’. He understood what to look for.”

Charles explains: “It’s finding that energy, sometimes it’s such raw performers and sometimes it’s people who have been in ten shows. It’s an instinctive thing – they’re Motown. Working closely with Mr Gordy and Michael I’ve been able to ask, what is that thing that Stevie Wonder has, what is that specific thing that Smokey has? We find that in someone that is authentic in them, rather than make them pretend to be that.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-3351" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2018/09/17.-MOTOWN-THE-MUSICAL.-Karis-Anderson-Diana-Ross.-Photo-Tristram-Kenton.jpg" alt="Karis Anderson 'Diana Ross'.
After success on Broadway and in the West End, Michael explains why the team really wanted to bring Motown The Musical to the rest of the UK. “We owed it to the UK,” he says. “The UK is probably 50% responsible for the success of Motown, it is the heart of Motown and the UK has kept Motown alive. The vibe here is fantastic, audiences are screaming and cheering and it’s incredible, it’s like being back in one of the shows from the 70s.

“The UK has always loved Motown, and we needed to do this tour because we know wherever we take Motown The Musical in the UK, it will be loved.”

Charles adds: “What has surprised me the most with audiences is that Motown appeals to every age. I love that each audience member finds some aspect of this show that resonates with them. The show is infectious, and the UK truly knows and loves this music.

“It’s not just a record label, it’s not just a show, it’s a movement.”

Motown the Musical tours the UK for the first time in October with X-factor finalist, Nathan Lewis as Smokey Robinson, Edward Baruwa as Berry Gordy, Karis Anderson as Diana Ross, and Shak Gabbidon-Williams as Marvin Gaye. It comes to Manchester Opera House from 26 February to 23 March 2019.
