<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As part of his HOME take-over for MIF19, iconic film-maker
and artist, David Lynch has created a limited-edition print available to
festival-goers, entitled, Four (4) Heads Came Out on Wednesday.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lynch’s festival residency includes his first major UK exhibition,
My Head is Disconnected, the biggest ever exhibition of visual art by David
Lynch in the UK, a practice he has been developing over five decades.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="800" height="808" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/07/Four-4-Heads-Came-Out-on-Wednesday-WEB.jpg" alt="Four (4) Heads Came Out on Wednesday by David Lynch" class="wp-image-4817" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/07/Four-4-Heads-Came-Out-on-Wednesday-WEB.jpg 800w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/07/Four-4-Heads-Came-Out-on-Wednesday-WEB-297x300.jpg 297w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/07/Four-4-Heads-Came-Out-on-Wednesday-WEB-768x776.jpg 768w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/07/Four-4-Heads-Came-Out-on-Wednesday-WEB-65x65.jpg 65w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/07/Four-4-Heads-Came-Out-on-Wednesday-WEB-716x723.jpg 716w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>Four (4) Heads Came Out on Wednesday by David Lynch</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before becoming an internationally acclaimed filmmaker,
Lynch trained as a painter at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and has
gone on to produce a prolific body of work across painting, sculpture,
photography and drawing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The visual art of David Lynch is key to understanding his
creative universe; this exhibition focuses on his impressive wall-based works,
the majority of which have never been seen before in the UK.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Four (4) Heads Came Out on Wednesday features a figurative
apparition with multiple floating, circling heads, wailing upon a lonely
hillside, a house or home in the rear-ground, earth and sky mingling in a
brewing storm of Lynchian menace. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img decoding="async" width="666" height="1000" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/07/David-Lynch-signing-limited-print-WEB-Photo-Credit-Michael-T.-Barile.jpg" alt="Lynch signing a print of Four (4) Heads Came Out on Wednesday " class="wp-image-4819" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/07/David-Lynch-signing-limited-print-WEB-Photo-Credit-Michael-T.-Barile.jpg 666w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/07/David-Lynch-signing-limited-print-WEB-Photo-Credit-Michael-T.-Barile-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px" /><figcaption> Lynch signing a print of Four (4) Heads Came Out on Wednesday </figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The limited-edition print was produced in the Parisian workshop of <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Item éditions (opens in a new tab)" href="http://www.itemeditions.com/" target="_blank">Item éditions</a>, where Lynch has created medium and large-format black-and-white lithographs for many decades in keeping with his typical themes: loneliness, love, eroticism, dreams, and death.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The exclusive edition of 100 prints have each been personally signed by the artist. Priced at £425 each, prints of Four (4) Heads Came Out on Wednesday go on sale to the public at noon on Thursday 4 July 2019 (with MIF and HOME Members able to purchase from noon on Wednesday 3 July 2019).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Purchasers will be invited to a private preview of exhibition My Head is Disconnected on Friday 5 July 2019. And all profits from the sales will go to HOME to help fund future exhibitions</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Legendary filmmaker David Lynch will present a special season of screenings, live concerts and talks, alongside his first major UK exhibition of visual art,&nbsp; My Head is Disconnected, as part of Manchester International Festival and the summer-long takeover:&nbsp;David Lynch at HOME.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An extensive film programme –&nbsp; It’s a Great Big Wonderful World&nbsp;– spans the many high points of Lynch’s unique oeuvre, from his earliest forays into short filmmaking to the seminal TV series&nbsp;Twin Peaks. In September, a programme of films chosen by Lynch,&nbsp;David Lynch’s True Favourites&nbsp;will include screenings of cult films such as Fellini’s&nbsp;8½, Fleming’s&nbsp; The Wizard of Oz, and Wilder’s&nbsp;Sunset Boulevard.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lynch&nbsp;jokes:&nbsp;“I was talking to Auntie Em, and she said there’s no place like HOME.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As part of the programme of talks and events accompanying the season, David Lynch will host a live audience Q&amp;A via video link from his studio in Los Angeles. Lynch will discuss his diverse artistic practice, from his iconic film and TV work to his paintings, drawings and sculptures and answer pre-submitted questions from the audience. Ticket holders will be contacted with details of how to submit their questions along with further information about the evening. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lynch will also participate via video link in a panel discussion, The Power of Transcendental Meditation, with musician Tim Burgess and the executive director of the David Lynch Foundation UK, Deirdre Parsons.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="532" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/BOB-FINDS-HIMSELF-IN-A-WORLD-FOR-WHICH-HE-HAS-NO-UNDERSTANDING-1024x532.jpg" alt="Bob finds himself in a world for which he has no understanding " class="wp-image-4316" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/BOB-FINDS-HIMSELF-IN-A-WORLD-FOR-WHICH-HE-HAS-NO-UNDERSTANDING-1024x532.jpg 1024w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/BOB-FINDS-HIMSELF-IN-A-WORLD-FOR-WHICH-HE-HAS-NO-UNDERSTANDING-300x156.jpg 300w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/BOB-FINDS-HIMSELF-IN-A-WORLD-FOR-WHICH-HE-HAS-NO-UNDERSTANDING-768x399.jpg 768w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/BOB-FINDS-HIMSELF-IN-A-WORLD-FOR-WHICH-HE-HAS-NO-UNDERSTANDING.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Bob finds himself in a world for which he has no understanding <br></figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The works of David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti have inspired a series of live Music performances hosted by musician, actress, and Lynch collaborator&nbsp;Chrysta Bell.&nbsp; Anna Calvi&nbsp;will perform tracks from across her career in a rare, intimate solo show, joined by Dorset singer-songwriter, Douglas Dare.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As part of the series, These New Puritans&nbsp;are presenting a specially devised set of reimagined pieces from David Lynch films, including music by Angelo Badalamenti and David Bowie, along with their own works. They are joined by psych-rock band&nbsp;Whyte Horses performing a set inspired by the Roadhouse in Lynch’s&nbsp;<em>Twin Peaks</em>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/Chrysta-Bell-credit-Elias-Tahan-768x1024.jpg" alt="Chrysta Bell credit Elias Tahan" class="wp-image-4318" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/Chrysta-Bell-credit-Elias-Tahan-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/Chrysta-Bell-credit-Elias-Tahan-225x300.jpg 225w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/Chrysta-Bell-credit-Elias-Tahan-332x443.jpg 332w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/Chrysta-Bell-credit-Elias-Tahan.jpg 900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>Chrysta Bell credit Elias Tahan</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the final of the three evening programme, cellist&nbsp;Oliver Coates&nbsp;is performing music inspired by pioneering cult electronic musician Enno Velthuys, following a set by vocalist&nbsp;Hatis Noit, showcasing her blend of Japanese classical music and avant-garde pop. All sets feature a specially devised performance and introductions by Chrysta Bell.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The film and music season runs alongside David Lynch’s first major UK visual art exhibition,&nbsp; My Head is Disconnected, opening 6 July. Featuring large-scale paintings, drawings and sculptures, this major exhibition will be a rare and fascinating insight into the mind and work of David Lynch.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="931" height="1024" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/WOMAN-WITH-SMALL-DEAD-BIRD-931x1024.jpg" alt="WOMAN WITH SMALL DEAD BIRD" class="wp-image-4315" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/WOMAN-WITH-SMALL-DEAD-BIRD-931x1024.jpg 931w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/WOMAN-WITH-SMALL-DEAD-BIRD-273x300.jpg 273w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/WOMAN-WITH-SMALL-DEAD-BIRD-768x845.jpg 768w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/05/WOMAN-WITH-SMALL-DEAD-BIRD.jpg 1091w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 931px) 100vw, 931px" /><figcaption>WOMAN WITH SMALL DEAD BIRD</figcaption></figure></div>

The visual art of David Lynch is key to understanding his creative universe; this exhibition focuses on his impressive wall-based works, the majority of which have never been seen before in the UK.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">John McGrath, MIF Artistic Director and Chief Executive says:&nbsp;“Although David Lynch is primarily known for his film and TV work, Lynch is an artist with an incredible range. Straddling film, music and his visual art, this is an opportunity to discover more about the work of one of today’s most fascinating and creative talents and to see and experience how he continues to influence other artists and musicians.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yoko Ono, David Lynch and Idris Elba are
among the artists commissioned to create new works to be premiered at Manchester
International Festival 2019 in July.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over 18 extraordinary days, internationally-acclaimed
artists from over 20 countries – many working in one-off creative
collaborations – will present 20 UK and world premieres at the cross-art form
biennial festival. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="418" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/03/Artists-at-the-MIF-programme-launch.jpg" alt="Artists at the MIF programme launch" class="wp-image-3676" srcset="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/03/Artists-at-the-MIF-programme-launch.jpg 700w, https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/03/Artists-at-the-MIF-programme-launch-300x179.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /><figcaption>Artists at the MIF programme launch</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yoko Ono will open the festival on July 4
with Bells for Peace, in which she’ll invite members of the public to gather in
Cathedral Gardens to send a message of peace to the world. Fifty years after
her early bed-in collaborations with John Lennon, this is a major new
commission from an artist who has boldly communicated her commitment to social
justice throughout her career. During the mass participatory event thousands of
celebratory voices and a people’s orchestra of bells from the UK and abroad
will ring and sing out for peace and welcome the world to Manchester.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="467" height="700" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/03/Lead-image-David-Lynch-by-Josh-Telles.jpg" alt="David Lynch. Photo Josh Telles.</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Legendary film director, David Lynch is taking over HOME for the duration of MIF19. In the gallery My Head Is Disconnected is the first major UK exhibition of his large-scale paintings, drawings and sculpture. In the theatre Lynch collaborator Chrysta Bell will host a one-off series of live shows from Lynch-inspired musicians, while the cinema will feature screenings of his classic movies, short films, conversations and more.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Idris Elba and Kwame Kwei-Armah are
collaborating on Tree, the story of a young man on a journey of healing, told
through dance, music and film. The piece fulfils the pair’s long-held ambition
to make a piece of work together inspired by South Africa. Directed by

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">John McGrath, MIF Artistic Director and Chief Executive says: “At MIF19 we see a whole host of artists looking to the future &#8211; some with hope, some with imagination and some with concern. We never impose themes on the artists we work with, but it’s striking how this year’s programme reflects our complicated times in often surprisingly joyous and unexpected ways. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;Featuring artists from more than 20 countries, the Festival also has strong local roots, with several commissions featuring the people of Manchester as participants. MIF19 will be a feast of energy, which I hope will inspire debate and delight for the festival’s 18 days and far beyond.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With MIF set to operate and create the
artistic programme for The Factory, the landmark cultural space being developed
in the city, several MIF19 works are presented as preFactory events, offering a
preview of the range and calibre of work planned.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This includes, Laurie Anderson’s To The
Moon, an expanded virtual reality work she is developing with the artist
Hsin-Chien Huang, featuring a VR experience and an immersive installation. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="467" src="https://quayslife.com/storage/2019/03/Laurie-Anderson-at-The-Factory-Groundbreaking-image-credit-Tarnish-Vision.jpg" alt="Laurie Anderson at The Factory Groundbreaking. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sir Mark Elder, Musical Director of the
Hallé, and Johan Simons, the acclaimed Dutch theatre director, are also
developing a new work for The Factory, inspired by composer Dimitri
Shostakovich and the writer Vasily Grossman. They will be discussing this new
work before a performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7, Leningrad.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester
City Council, says: &#8220;Since its early beginnings in 2005 MIF has attracted
thousands of visitors from around the world that bring with them a huge
economic boost to the city. The Festival is unrivalled in terms of the calibre
of internationally renowned artists, musicians and performers that take part,
whilst also inspiring local people themselves to get involved. &#8220;These are
exciting times for culture in Manchester. As we look ahead to the opening of
the city&#8217;s landmark new cultural venue The Factory in a couple of years&#8217; times,
MIF19 is once again set to place Manchester centre-stage and showcase it as the
vibrant centre of innovation, culture, and creativity that it undoubtedly
is.&#8221;</p>
