This Geomag Magicube set is aimed at pre-school children from 1 to 5 which will introduce them to the world of construction toys.

It contains nine magnetic building blocks made from 100% recycled plastic; three cubes, three triangle and three quarter-circle pieces. This is themed the Animals set because it comes with a straight-forward pictorial instruction booklet with a guide to make ten simple animal shapes including kitten, fish, llama and crab. For the very young children who may be unable to follow the instructions, older siblings or parents could easily make them and introduce fun games to teach babies the animal names.

More likely than not though, the children will probably begin to build their own creations and creatures without taking the slightest glimpse at the instructions (hence the attempt at a gremlin and the rocket my young helper fashioned).

This is an educational set as well as a toy and linking the blocks together will help children with their fine motor skills.

The blocks are brightly coloured and appealing but chunky enough to prevent little hands from getting them fully into their owner’s mouths.

Even with the limited number of blocks in the set, there are many shapes that imaginative children can build and play with.

The strength of the magnets is perfectly judged because they are sufficiently powerful to keep the construction intact while building or moving but they are not too strong that a toddler would struggle to separate them. Another plus is that they won’t quickly snap together and trap their fingers in either. They do however make a very satisfying clicking sound when the magnets align that also makes these perfect fidget material.
